Looking for oil rigs employment is always stressful regardless of your experience. You always wonder if there are jobs available (yes, there are jobs available – Exxon alone is spending $150 billion over the next five years on exploration and drilling), if there is a better way to look for jobs, whether or not your cover letters and resume are perfect, and how to impress your interviewer and get the job. You also worry about asking for too much salary. The simple fact is – for most people, job hunting is a numbers game. Send off enough job applications and most people will get at least a few interviews. This article discusses what to do after you get your interview.

On average, most people have a one in five chance of getting a job offer after their interview. The reason for this high rate is simple – it is expensive for companies to interview people. Time spent interviewing job candidates is time not spent doing productive (making money for the company) work. So once the human resources department shortlists your resume and calls you for the interview, you are well on the way to getting hired.

When the economy is growing, experienced oil rig workers sometimes have a 100% chance of getting hired immediately. Even in a downturn, there is no reason for anyone to attend 10 or 20 interviews and be rejected for all of them. If this has happened to you, you may be suffering from what psychologists call “self-defeating behavior” or “self-sabotaging behavior”. Getting professional counselling or psychiatric help may well get you a job faster than sending out your resumes.

Sometimes, when you look at job boards, especially free-to-use sites like Monster, you see dozens or even hundreds of vacancies for (Read more ...)

Six sigma works on a hierarchal structure. It constitutes of White Belts, Green Belts, Black Belts and Master Black Belts. Each belt is distinguished from other on the basis of its skill level and scope in terms of process improvement.

White Belts are at the bottom ladder of Six Sigma, which means that they go through a high level overview on Six Sigma with the primary objective of familiarizing them with terminology related to Six Sigma (mean, standard deviation etc.).Mostly all the employees in the company are trained at the White Belt level. White Belts may help Green Belts and black belts in data collection.

Next level is Green Belts who are trained in Six Sigma at a much more detailed level. Their training may range from a few days up to few weeks. They are trained in process improvement techniques including the Six Sigma DMAIC road map for improving results. Green Belts usually lead smaller projects within their business unit or support portions of larger projects led by a more experienced Black Belt. Green Belts usually undertake process improvements in their specific functional areas. Green Belts are usually not exposed to advanced Six Sigma concepts, so they are not equipped to solve really tough problems.

The third level of Six Sigma is Black Belts. Their training includes application of yet advanced statistical tools and techniques for process improvements. Black belts work on projects which are cross functional in nature and are of a more strategic importance to the company. Their training varies to a week to four weeks. It is advisable to undergo the Black Belt training after the Green Belt, as the Black Belt builds on top of the Green Belt course.

The final level on the Six Sigma ladder is that of Master Black Belts. These (Read more ...)

One of the quickest and more effective ways to expose your art or crafts to the public is by opening a booth at an art or craft show. Thousands of people come to these art shows each year with the intention of buying something, and there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight.

Before you pack your bags and head out to the next show, you should definitely learn as much as you can about art shows. This type of work requires planning, research and various expenses, and may not be for everyone.

A great starting point is to visit sunshineartist.com. Sunshine Artist is a great magazine that covers art shows in detail. They provide listings of upcoming art shows and information on how you can participate. They also evaluate art shows and provide reports on sales, attendance, and other important details.

It may be a good idea to head out to your first art show as a visitor before actually setting up shop. Once you arrive, walk around and just observe how everything works. Observe the booths that have the most traffic and see what they are doing right. Introduce yourself to the booth owner and see if they are open to talking about their success with you. As long as they are not in direct competition with you, they should be happy to give you some pointers.

When you sell your work at an art show you are selling directly to the public. You make all of the profit. There is no need to share a huge percentage with an agent or gallery owner.

It is probably best to sell items at various prices to accommodate the different buyers that come to your booth. If you typically sell paintings for thousands of dollars, offer smaller, more affordable prints as well. This way, your art can be available to everyone.

Make sure you can accept (Read more ...)

You’d be forgiven for thinking the latest reports for graduates aren’t great. As a recent example, graduate info website milkround.com, stated that 2009 will likely see a 5.4 decrease in available graduate jobs compared to last year. That said, there are certainly industries and business sectors which are growing, and many students are viewing the current financial crisis as an excuse to become self-employed once they leave college. So why are graduates with writing skills becoming more and more sought after?

In regards to the current economic crisis and the subsequent decline of print journalism, it might seem churlish to use this article to praise the opportunities available in the journalism sector. Yet, whilst print is said to be on the downturn, online news sources are being forced to adapt, and each have to find their respective unique selling point for competing on the internet. Consequently, we are currently seeing sufficient growth with online journalism, and the need to be adaptable – not just in what you can write about and how (i.e. 1000 word articles, blog posts, data presentation), but also how you conduct your research.

As a result of the growth in social media and the shift in the journalism industry, an increasing number of companies and businesses are discovering the importance and worth of online visibility – a realization that is all the more pertinent at a time of economic change and a need for cheaper modes of promotion. Digital marketing and PR, therefore, is growing – and an increasing amount of graduates with writing skills and a natural knowledge of social networks and online trends are being called upon to write optimised press releases and distributing them to the relevant (Read more ...)

It is an interesting time for the release of the new UK university league tables. Whilst graduates are preparing for their release into the toughest economic climate seen for years, many who have established themselves in the growing number of provincial areas at newer institutions are finding that they’ll need to look for jobs in London after graduation. Additionally, those who are considering enrolling are welcoming the ever-improving performance of younger, often cheaper, colleges. So where are the best new universities?

University of Ulster
A frequently well-placed institution on the table, the University of Ulster stays at 51 this year and has excelled in terms of academic service spend over the last year. Since being established in 1968, the university now boasts almost 30,000 students over four campuses in Belfast, Coleraine, Derry (Magee College), and Jordanstown – as well as e-Learning services. In 2009 it has been announced that many Jordanstown courses will be moved to Belfast, further establishing the capital as the central hub.

Robert Gordon University
Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University has climbed 11 places over the past year and currently resides at number 50. Graduate prospects were the most impressive aspect of its performance with a rating of 84.1 – a score that is all the more impressive for the fact that the institution was only established in 1992. Since then the number of students have amounted to over 12,000 across two campuses. This year it was named ‘The Best Modern University in the UK’ by The Times.

Nottingham Trent University
Similarly, Nottingham Trent has also climbed highly over the last year, moving from 52 to 46. With a high average completion percentage (Read more ...)

As we trundle through the recession, it gets more and more difficult to gauge exactly how the IT industry is coping. There have been many reports of job cuts, especially amongst big businesses such as Dell and BT, yet recent press has reported that some sectors are seeing growth – and with W-Tech re-scheduled for June, 2009 might be the year for women who want IT Jobs.

In research published by The IT Job Board, opportunities available in the private sector have been seen to decline significantly, though this is not the case for the public sector. 71 percent of those asked said they were content with the jobs they were doing. However, out of the minority who are not happy, 30 percent said they were eager to bag a job in the public service sector.

The reasons given for such growth and confidence in public service stem from the reputation for the sector to be better equipped to adapt to and accept new technologies. Additionally, many of those asked estimated that the public service sector is more likely to receive financial aid from the government.

So for those who are considering a job in IT, it seems logical to focus on opportunities in the public sector for 2009 at least. But increasing social shifts when it comes to IT jobs may mean that the industry is more open to women this year than it ever has been, especially due to the planned W-Tech event on June 24th in London.

W-Tech is a careers and recruitment event for women who are eager to break into a male-dominated industry, and looks at technical aspects of IT as well as the social elements that make up the modern techie workplace. The day is free entry and runs from 12:00pm until 5:45pm, and was initially planned in February but was snowed off.

The day’s (Read more ...)

Selling in a recession stricken market is a difficult job. Customers either order less or postpone buying which directly and adversely affects budget.
During a tight market, customers most loath to spend money. They tighten their budget and strive to make use of every penny and waste nothing. Nobody affords to waste money in tight market. Now is the time to plug up the holes and not let things slip through the cracks.
If all these years you were selling your product by focusing on its key features, then now is the time to think different. Try to answer the questions like—do your products or services help your customers to plug up some holes? Do you help them save money? Are they benefited by your product? If the answer is ‘yes’, then turn the benefits to your key selling points. Think out of the box and find out how you can help them save money or resources.
If earlier you were selling savings now is the time to sell cost. Don’t tell your customers that they are going to save money from your product; they already know that and probably many others also told them the same about their offerings…so what difference will you make? Emphasize on their expenditure and consecutive loss and stress that spending money on your product will be a key to curb this expenditure. Instead of talking about the benefit of your product remind them the existing problems they face. This way they will start looking at your product with some interest.

Here is a piece of conversation between the sales person and the potential customer, demonstrating how to turn the tables and compel the customer to think twice before rejecting your offer.
Customer: “Well, it looks good, but I really don’t think we can spend any money (Read more ...)

There are many bloggers who make incomes of several thousand dollars per month from their blogs. These are not casual bloggers who only want to see their words and their name online or who just want to put forth a point-of-view, these are serious bloggers who have made blogging into a full-time (or nearly full-time) job.

Here are some of the ways they make money from their blogs and ways you can also blog for bucks:

Advertising! There are many advertisers waiting for you to approach them, these are programs such as Google’s Adsense (https ://www.google.com/adsense/) where you allow companies to place their ads . . . ads related to your topic . . . on your blog. Each time one of your readers clicks on an ad on your blog, you earn a small amount of money (a predetermined amount). A slightly different approach is used by companies such as CrispADS (http://www.crispads.com/). With this type of service, you tell them how much you want to charge for advertising space on your blog and they will attempt to find an advertiser who will pay that price (plus a commission for the go-between company). These are just two of a large group that is expanding daily.

Blog Feeds! RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and ATOM Feeds are two of the dominant blog feeds. The object of a blog feed is to distribute every new post you add to your blog to a list of subscribers; you make your blog posts available to RSS or ATOM, people who want to read your stuff on a regular basis can subscribe to your posts and read them on a newsreader.
